•• Второе и третье слово поставлены здесь рядом лишь для предупреждения – их не следует путать. Вот характерный пример употребления слова credulity: The events of the past years, which still defy credulity… – События, которые и сейчас кажутся невероятными/неправдоподобными… Как видим, единственный перевод, предлагаемый Новым БАРСом (доверчивость, легковерие), здесь не подходит.
•• Гораздо чаще встречается слово credibility ( способность внушать доверие) и credible (заслуживающий доверия, авторитетный). В переводе часто приходится искать к этому слову «особый подход». Несколько интересных примеров. Mr.Rubin, himself a former banker, knows that empty bluff destroys credibility (Economist). Можно, казалось бы, сказать: пустые угрозы подрывают доверие. Но доверие по-русски – понятие, скорее предполагающее взаимность, поэтому надо указать, доверие к кому (в данном случае – к самому источнику угроз) имеется в виду. Другой вариант перевода: пустые угрозы неубедительны. Слова убедительный, убедительность оказываются кстати и в некоторых других контекстах, например: the credibility of nuclear
deterrence – убедительность ядерного сдерживания/устрашения. Из статьи в журнале Time рассказывающей о расследовании обвинений Полы Джоунз в адрес президента Клинтона в сексуальных домогательствах: Some of the questions posed to the troopers were meant to test their credibility. Здесь слово credibility по значению близко к русским достоверность, правдоподобие (свидетельских показаний). Но в данном случае я воспользовался бы словом правдивость – это контекстуальный перевод, которого, разумеется, не найти в словарях. Нередко подходящим является довольно модный фразеологизм кредит доверия: The credibility of formerly revered bureaucrats is in tatters (U.S. News & World Report). – Кредит доверия уважаемых прежде бюрократов окончательно подорван. Еще один оттенок значения слова credible – надежность. Например, в рекламе компании Ericsson: You’d be hard-pressed to find a credible supplier with more experience of telecoms operations.
•• Как видим, слово credible приобретает очень широкую семантику, а, значит, отчасти десемантизируется. В таких случаях есть два основных способа перевода: конкретизация, приведение к стандартной для русского языка сочетаемости (credible supplier – надежный поставщик) и нахождение русского слова с размытой семантикой, которое, хотя и с оговорками, может выручить во многих случаях и контекстах. Для credible, credibility такими словами могут быть
серьезный, серьезность. Предлагаю читателю в трудных случаях поэкспериментировать с этими словами. Пример из New York Times: Mr. Khatami, who won an overwhelming vote in May on a platform of moderate reform, is making a credible initial effort to give Iranians a less rigid government. Другой пример – из газеты Moscow Times: Mr. Lebed is not acting like a credible politician in sticking with dubious accusations aired on… U.S. television.
•• Еще одно слово, этимологически и в какой-то мере по смыслу родственное credibility. Это слово – credential(s) – не совсем удачно описано в Новом БАРСе (мандат, верительные грамоты, диплом). Пример актуального употребления этого слова из Economist: Mr. Enger’s conservative credentials are solid enough for him to be able to indulge in such experiments. – Консервативная репутация г-на Энгера достаточно прочна, и поэтому он вполне может позволить себе подобные эксперименты.
